The maize flour price is expected to go up any time this week following the exhaustion of the subsidized government maize program that started in mid-2017. The CS talking to Citizen TV said that they are in talks with millers to ensure that the price is bearable to Kenyans.
“So during this intervening period when transition is happening, we are likely to see the decline in the government subsidized maize and the other regulated maize stocks that will not last for more than five days, later we will return to normal market prices,” Bett said.
“I am assuring consumers that they should not be worried because as a government we have put in to place measures to ensure that the prices are regulated until the government subsidy is out of stock,” he added.
The government maize subsidy project that started in June due to drought has seen Kenyans buy a 2kg packet of maize flour go for Sh.90 but with its exhaustion, Kenyans will have to part with not more than sh.120 per packet.
