The government is set to spend over Sh5 billion to tackle the raging hunger that has affected 2.9 million people in 19 counties.
Speaking on Thursday, government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe the funds will also be used in mitigating the drought that is set to extend up to August 2018.
"The government has been closely monitoring the situation and is working with stakeholders to coordinate effective short and long-term interventions," Kiraithe said.
"With the late start of short rains, all indications are that the drought will persist into 2017," he said.
The state has classified Kilifi, Garissa, Kwale, Lamu and Marsabit counties as areas in need of emergency response owing to the drought.
Other counties include Kitui, Maachakos, Kajiado, Laikipia, West Pokot, Isiolo, Makueni, Mandera, Meru (North), Narok, Samburu, TaitaTaveta, Turkana and Wajir counties.
