The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders (NCHRD-K) has been following harassment of journalists and observers of the fourth estate during the party primaries and ongoing campaigns. As a result the Government of Kenya has been told to ensure security for the fourth estate during the August 8 general election.
Yesterday, NCHRD-K released a report with 13 cases of harassment on human rights guardians, monitors and journalists.
“Election monitors and observers play an important role in enhancing the transparency and credibility of elections and democratic governance. Information documented by the group has been critical in highlighting electoral malpractices and human rights violations,” reads the report as reported by The Standard.
In the report the Nandi/Kisumu border was listed as one of the most hostile areas to work from due to mixed feelings from local communities. There are further reports of journalists being harassed in Wajir, Uasin Gishu, Laikipia, Garissa, and Nakuru counties. It is important that the government understands the role the fourth estate will play in the August 8 election.
