Citizens Conventions Party (CCP) chairperson Grace Akumu has urged the government to put up mechanisms of financially assisting former Members of Parliament who served in earlier years.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Saturday, Ms Akumu said that many former MPs are languishing in poverty after the government ‘abandoned’ them.

“Ex MPs in Kenya who paved the way for us to be where we are today are suffering because what they get as pension is peanuts,” she said.

She said that most former MPs could not meet their daily financial needs despite duly serving this county in the past.

Of late, the government has been trying to accommodate former MPs in state parastatals and last month, former Kilifi North MP Noah Katana Ngala was appointed to the Board of Kenya National Library Services for three years.

Former North Mugirango Borabu MP Wilfred Ombui and former Kasarani MP William Omondi were appointed to the boards of Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation and Lake Basin Development Authority respectively.
