The government has been urged to formulate ways of dealing with unemployment among the youth.
Former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi said that the rise in unemployment is a national concern and the government must act swiftly.
Mwathi said that rising unemployment has seen an upsurge in crime and other social vices.
“Unemployment is becoming a national threat and the government must find measures to address it,” he said.
The former legislator though lauded the introduction of Youth fund and the Uwezo fund adding that more needs to be done.
Mwathi at the same time took issue with most youths accusing them of lacking the desire and will to succeed.
He observed that despite going to school and getting skills, many youth have turned to drug abuse.
The former MP advised university graduates to use the skills they have to create employment and help the many who are jobless.
Mwathi said that time has come for the youth to take part in activities like farming which he observed has real money.
“The problem with many young people is that they are reluctant to take up agriculture,” he said.
Mwathi called on the government to educate and encourage young people to engage in agricultural production as a way of curbing unemployment.
