Nyaribari Chache legislator Richard Tong’i has appealed to the government to stop channeling salaries for workers in schools through school heads but instead, pay them directly for better accountability.

Addressing the casual workers at Otamba Secondary school on Thursday evening the Mp regretted that the workers are frustrated due to the minimal pay they receive that can’t even meet their basic needs.

He pointed out that the workers who include bursars, lab technicians, librarian’s, cooks, matrons, nurses and watchmen are paid peanuts via the BOG who hire and fire them at will.

He cited, for instance, a school watchman being paid a meager salary of Sh3,000.

“The BOG also takes the personal emolument funds meant to be salaries for these workers and channels it to other projects instead of paying the workers," added Tong'i.

He urged the government to pay these workers through the ministry of education so that they can enjoy good working conditions just like other civil servants.

Tong'i further said that every worker is entitled to join a Union to channel their concerns.

But as the situation is currently, the workers are not allowed to join them and are intimidated by being fired.
