The government has been urged to speed up the process of offering insurance to flower farm workers.
Nakuru County implementation committee chairperson Samuel Wanango said that the workers were still finding it hard to access quality and affordable health care
Speaking to journalists in Nakuru, Wanango noted that many more were falling ill and their conditions worsened as they could not afford to pay the hospital bills.
“We have seen cases like asthma, develop into very serious illness. Even diseases like common cold, malaria and typhoid has become fatal as they cannot afford to go to the hospital due to poor pay,” he added
Wanango proposed that the government makes it mandatory for that their employers offered them NHIF and NSSF cards
His view was supported by Nominated MCA Esther Njeri, who cited that majority of the children developed serious diseases.
“We have seen increased cases of rickets and such children require a lot of attention. In most cases, the mothers neglect the issue as they are forced to pay a lot of money for therapy sessions. The situation hence becomes worse,” she added
Magere cited that the Governor Kinuthia Mbugua had promised to create a payment plan for the flower farm workers during his campaigns.
“We are appealing to the governor to fasten the process to ensure that everyone enjoys these basic human rights,” she added.
