A section of Kibera residents now want the national government to help find a solution to the never ending water shortage issue in the area.
The residents say the county government has failed in providing basic services to them. They claim that despite paying for water services, the county had turned a blind eye towards them even after making several attempts to get the attention of the management of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company by protesting numerous times.
“In the past few weeks we have faced extreme difficulties in getting water. This, I am sure is risking our health as residents and, therefore, there is need for the government to take quick action,” said Catherine Anyango, a resident in the area.
She appealed to the Water cabinet secretary, Eugene Wamalwa to intervene since the county government had failed in their core mandate of providing basic necessities such as water. She also pointed out that most women with young children and elders were the most affected as many children had stopped going to school and were instead accompanying their mothers to fetch the precious commodity.
Another resident, Enock Onyango said when a mother delivers in the area, getting water to wash the mother and the new born is a nightmare and equally when deaths occur, people have to buy mineral water to cleanse down the body.
