A non-state housing agency has asked the government to concentrate on enabling low-cost housing development within urban areas to avert proliferation of slums.
Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) said an all-inclusive strategy where the private sector is incentivised to fund project for low income earners should be adopted.
Speaking in Nairobi, HFHI Europe, Middle East and Africa vice president Torre Nelson said the organisation was ready to join the state-sponsored housing programme to fast-track delivery of the million houses promised by the Jubilee government in the next five years.
“Secure land tenure and cheaper housing finance could help drive the housing agenda thereby reducing Kenya’s deficit from the current two million,” he said.
Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the government was in the process of identifying parcels of land where private real estate firms would be facilitated to build houses.
