Nominated MP David Ole Sankok now wants the government to introduce speaking street lights to aid the blind.

Speaking at the Moi Avenue Primary School Nairobi, when Kenya joined the world to mark the International Day for Persons With Disabilities Sunday, Sankok urged the government to introduce the new technology to ensure road safety of the visually challenged.

''The current streetlights are unsuitable for the blind. We now demand that talking streetlights be introduced so that the blind can also be assured of their safety when using our roads,'' he said.

The former National Council for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) chair also called upon the government to ensure full implementation of earlier proposed changes to ensure full recognition of the disabled.

He said that despite an earlier push to have all buildings fitted with ramps, to facilitate easy entrance and exit of the disabled, mostly the crippled who depend on their tricycles and wheelchairs, some building owners are yet to comply.

''Some buildings are still fitted with stairs only making it hard for the physically challenged to access them.Others are only fitted with sirens to alert people in case of emergency leaving out the deaf,'' said Sankok.
