Association of pyrethrum farmers have called upon the government through legislation to ensure that their activities are not in vain and that they do not incur losses.
Speaking at a consultative meeting in Nakuru on Friday attended by various MPs from pyrethrum farming regions, the farmers said pyrethrum farming if taken into consideration can boost the economy of this nation.
"The pyrethrum farming should be taken into considerations to ensure a boost in the economy as well as improve our living standards,"said John Kamau, one of the farmers.
The farmers representatives were drawn from various pyrethrum zones including Uasin Gishu, Meru, Nyandarua and Nakuru speaking in one voice for government's intervention in the sector.
The meeting was facilitated by a private investor in pyrethrum farming, the High chem group of companies working with farmers in the sector.
Nakuru legislators Kimani Ngunjiri(Bahati), Samuel Arama (Nakuru West), Nelson Gaichuie (Subukia), Joseph Kiuna (Njoro), Mathenge Nderitu(Gilgil) and Samuel Gichigi(Kipipiri) attended the meeting Dr.Wachira Maina MD High chem said pyrethrum farming can be depended on by more than 200,000 households in Kenya.
He added that pyrethrum products if exported can earn Kenya up to 5 billion shillings as well as 7.5 billion to local farmers.
It's due to these reasons that he appealed to the government to take pyrethrum farming seriously and boost farmers in the sector.
