Leaders in Nakuru County have called on the county government to shut down private hostels in the area that do not offer proper security to their students. The leaders cited that such hostels could become easy targets for Alshabaab and other militia groups targeting masses. Nominated Member of County Assembly Esther Njeri Magere cited that the recent killings in Garrisa were a clear indication that more was needed to protect their children. “We are calling on the government to ensure that all the hostels have at least one armed police officers who will man the children,” said Magere. Magere also appealed for increased surveillance in the hostels, calling on the students to report any suspicious activity. “We would like them to pinpoint even strange students and characters in the hostels. Otherwise some of the militia group might hide and disguise themselves as students like what we suspect happened in Garrisa,” added Magere. Lakeview MCA Simon Wanango called on hostels to do background checks on all the students. “They should be able to give detailed accounts on their family history. They should also provide enough paper work indicating who and where they are from. This will enable hostel owners detect anyone who is working against them,” said wanango. He also called on the government to deploy NSIS in universities.
