The Kenya government has been urged to fully support small scale farmers to curb hanger in the country.
Speaking in Gilgil yesterday, UN special envoy for hunger mitigation Michael Moriendes said the escalating cases of hunger in the country and other third world states can only be controlled if governments come up and support small holders in the farms.
"The escalating hunger cases in Kenya can only be controlled if the small scale farmers will be supported," he said.
Moriendes said small holders contribute to more than 70 per cent of the total food production in the country adding that majority of small holders are poor who cannot afford all agricultural needs in order to produce enough food for the Nation.
Speaking in the same meeting, Gilgil senior extension officer Agnes Njue urged the government to supply free certified seeds to small holders during this planting season to reduce the input cost.
"I want to urge the government to supply free maize seeds in order to reduce cost to small holders," said Njue.
