The national government has been on the forefront to eradicate the practice of female genital mutilation(FGM) in some parts of the country where the practice is still rife.
However, the efforts were dealt a big blow in Marakwet East after 11 girls demanded the cut despite its known effects on the girlchild.
The Wewo sub location assistant Chief, Richard Kemboi says the girls who demanded the cut were circumcised at Boroko village.
Kemboi says despite calling for back up from security officers they were blocked from accessing the area by armed youths.
“This allowed the circumcisers and the girls to flee to the forest where the initiation went on,” Kemboi told the press.
He said the minors were being forced to voluntarily undergo the illegal practice due to peer pressure.
“While we are doing everything we can to stop the vice, we cannot be everywhere every time unless the people themselves change their attitude towards the practice,” he said.
