Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has criticised the national government for frustrating efforts to commercialize agriculture at the county level.
The county boss has said that counties have done little to improve the agriculture sector because the national government is still holding funds allocated to the counties by the National Treasury.
Jama who was speaking at the Tawakal Irrigation farm during a routine tour on Friday, revealed that counties receive monetary allocations less than a third of the total funds needed.
“We can never do much with the little monies we receive. This is much evident with the situations on the ground,” said Jama.
He noted that that the national government mainly deals with policies, while the actual implementation of proposed programmes lies within the counties but funds have been insufficient to realize the policies created.
The county boss further affirmed that he will continue supporting irrigation along Tana River to increase food security despite minimal support from the national government.
