Plans to revive construction of the proposed Nakuru airport are at an advanced stage, Governor Lee Kinyanjui has said.
Speaking from his offices on Tuesday, the county boss said he has the backing of President Uhuru Kenyatta to go ahead with the plans.
"I have had talks with the president, who has underscored the need to have an operational airport in Nakuru," he said.
Kinyanjui said, once complete, the facility would be a major boost to the county's economy as it will support tourism and horticultural business.
"Flower farmers in Naivasha will have a chance to increase their exports to Europe and the United States. The airport will also make it easier for the county to receive tourists," he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.
The airport was conceived in 2004 but has not been realised 13 years later.
"My administration is consulting other stakeholders to ensure the construction starts," the hopeful governor added.
The project will involve the two levels of government, the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Kinyanjui said.
