Speaking to journalists at Marsabit Town on Sunday, Yattani said that the government needs to give priority to the region in terms of security.

He said that acts of terror related attacks that are being reported in the region are worrying.

“We are appealing to the government to deploy more security in Northern Kenyan so that resident’s security can be guaranteed especially this electioneering period,” he said.

The governor said that fear is increasingly engulfing the region due to frequent terror attacks.

While condemning last Friday’s suspected terror attack in Elwak where five people among them two police officers died outside an Equity bank, Yattani said that terrorists are becoming daring and that the government security agencies have to act fast.

He asked security agencies to conduct frequent swoops and smoke out terror agencies and sympathizers.

The Marsabit county boss also asked the government to investigate cases of radicalization and take action against people who could be luring young people to crime and terrorism.

Insecurity has been a matter of concern in Mandera, Garissa, Wajir and Lamu with cases of Improvised Electronic Device (IED) attacks being reported.

Several people including police officers have been killed in terror related attacks in Mandera, Garissa and Lamu counties in the last two months.

The national government says that security situation in Northern region is under control and wants residents to be vigilant and report suspicious people to the police.
