Mombasa gubernatorial aspirant Hezron Awiti has told Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to enhance his security.

Awiti who spoke to journalists in Mombasa on Friday said he feared for his life after his campaign billboard was vandalised at Backstan estate. He also said there were vehicles with no registration plates trailing him particularly at night.“I followed the law before I put up this billboard,” an infuriated Awiti said.“Why is it that we are not allowed to put up our billboards? Aren’t there police in Mombasa?”He said the Thursday night incident happened 100 metres away from the Nyali police station.“I am not a coward,” the Nyali MP said.“No one will intimidate me. We are all equal and free to campaign in Mombasa.”On June 24, Awiti accused Joho of blocking his bid to erect his campaign billboards in Mombasa town. The MP said he was unable to erect billboards in Mombasa because Joho had ordered outdoor advertising firms not to establish any other gubernatorial aspirant’s billboard in Mombasa other than his.“Joho is displaying dictatorial tendencies, which have been the hallmark of his leadership during the past four and a half years. Mombasa is not a Sultanate and we shall therefore not allow old school tactics,” he said then.Other gubernatorial candidates challenging Joho - Hassan Omar (Wiper) and Suleiman Shahbal (Jubilee Party) accused the county chief of applying unorthodox tactics in fighting to retain his seat.
