Led by Dr Hassan Mwakimako, a political commentator from Pwani University, the analysts said most of the gubernatorial aspirants in the county have been keen to select running mates from ethnic voting blocs, that are likely to guarantee them a win.

Former Kisauni MP Anania Mwaboza, who has declared interest in the gubernatorial seat, has said he will take advantage of communities that have been migrating to the region over the years, as he seeks to unseat Joho.

“I want upcountry communities to help me choose my running mate. I call upon the Mijikenda to unite so that we can attract support from other communities to enable us win,” said Mwaboza, as quoted by the Standard.

However, Dr Mwakimako has said the leader's performance will also play a key role in determining whether the electorate will vote for him.

“People will also look at the past to assess how he (Mwaboza) performed during his three years as Kisauni MP,” said Dr Mwakimako.

According to a 2013 Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) report, the Mijikenda Community accounts for 29 per cent of the county voters, Nyanza and Ukambani make up 16 and 15 per cent respectively.

Nyali MP Hezron who has also thrown his hat in the race, has been wooing the Mijikenda Community ahead of the election.
