Residents of Tana River County have been urged to join hands in the fight against destruction of the environment.
Tana River governor Dhadho Godhana called on the residents and all stakeholders in the county to work together to protect the environment.
Speaking when he visited Boka village, the governor said the county is one of the driest parts of the country.
He said in the recent past it has experienced a dry spell where the rains that were expected failed leading to a looming hunger in the county due to crop failure.
“Tana River is one of the driest parts of the country and we should lead the fight to save the environment. We must join hands with other leaders in the fight to safeguard our environment,” said Mr Godhana.
The governor has outlawed the charcoal business in Tana River County, a move that he said is meant to protect the environment.
Mr Godhana raised concerns over massive destruction of forests and directive the county officers to enforce the ban or face being sacked.
He said the country will continue to experience harsh environmental conditions unless we stand against logging and charcoal burning.
He ordered the officers to impound any lorry ferrying charcoal from the county.
