Police and officials from the Taita Taveta County Government have impounded seven lorries, a shovel and other equipment used to illegally harvest sand at Paranga River following a tip off by residents.
The team included Governor Granton Samboja, County Assembly Majority Leader and Werugha MCA Jason Tuja, and nominated MCA Christopher Mwambingu.
The governor had banned sand harvesting across the County, but announced that his administration had temporarily lifted the blanket ban issued against sand harvesting and allowed only, sand harvesting for domestic use within the county until proper policies and legislation is enacted to regulate the business.
Individuals/registered groups and transport companies interested in the business are requested to visit sub-county revenue offices for permits.
"The county has been loosing millions in revenue through unscrupulous business persons who harvest sand and evade paying taxes," said Samboja.
"Enough is Enough! we remain relentless in the fight to bring order and ensure we raise revenue needed for the development and progress of our county," he added on Sunday.
