Garissa Council of Elders chairperson, Dubat Amey has resigned.
The reason behind his resignation is being attributed to frustrations from the Garissa governor, Nathif Jama.
Addressing the press in Garissa town, Dubat said that since his appointment to the 15 member executive bench in March 30 last year, the local elders have never a meeting or even heard a word from the governor.
“We were set to work very closely with the county administration and engage other 50 members in peace-building. The county governor was to lead the team, but he has never shown any willingness,'’ Amey said.
He further added that the governor had sidelined them only consulting with a clique from his community.
‘'Jama has instead selected a few elders from his own community to drive his personal politics. We are not part to any decisions reached, because they do not represent the interests of Garissa residents,” Amey said.
The council of elders is tasked at spearheading peace talks in the localities so as to avert perennial conflicts as had been witnessed in the past over boundary disputes.
