The Ethics and Anti-graft Commission (EACC) has confirmed that at least seven county governors have been booked to answer charges over alleged graft cases.
According to the commission's CEO Halakhe Waqo, two of the county chiefs have since faced their charges. He, however, declined to make public the names of the governors.
Garissa Governor Nadhif Jama has already been arraigned in courts for abuse of power alongside several other members of his county executives.
Governors Alfred Mutua of Machakos, Mwangi wa Iria of Murang’a, Evans Kidero of Nairobi County and Godana Doyo of Isiolo have stalled the EACC’s move to legally prosecute them by seeking court injunctions.
The latest report from the graft commission comes a day after it declared all the 47 counties as breeding dens of corruption, where county managers embezzle public resources.
The anti-graft commission revealed that the departments in which corruption is rife include procurement department, finance, public service and tendering boards, as well as the roads and public works departments.
Halakhe said the specific forms of graft cases have been evident in illegal procurement processes, mismanagement of county finances, conflicts of interest in awarding tenders, forgery of documents, bribery and political influence in tendering, hiring of unqualified workers, theft of public revenues collected, shoddy construction of major roads among others.
He added that those accused of frequently engaging in the pillage of public resources include MCAs and governors.
