Awiti claimed that Joho has been derogatorily referring to his rivals as 'Wabara (upcountry migrants) who have no place in the region's political positions'.

“It is so unfortunate for a governor to insinuate that only the indigenous Coastal dwellers should venture into elective posts. Such schemes are misguided and uncalled for because Joho also doesn't have roots in the Coast,” said Awiti.

The Nyali legislator said Mombasa is one of the cosmopolitan cities in the country, adding that its political seats are open to anyone from any part of the country so long as electoral rules and regulations remain applicable.

The parliamentarian also sought to demand answers from the sitting governor as to why influential families in the Coastal town still posess huge chunks of land yet local and genuine residents continue to live as squatters in their ancestral lands.

Awiti has publicly declared his interest to unseat the current Mombasa County governor noting that the coastal region should regain its lost glory.
