Mombasa county might soon become free-garbage county after the county government announced strategies to build a waste recycling plant.
In the Medium Term Draft Budget 2018/2019, the county has set aside Sh6.5 billion for the set up of the waste recycling plant.
Governor Joho has revealed that the plant will enable the waste recycled into usable products.
The duration of the project is touted to be approximately five years.
During his first address to the county assembly last September, Mr Joho divulged that his administration has chosen Kabirani as the site to be set up the the plant.
“We aim to create a sustainable environment by investing in an Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan at Kibarani. We will provide incentives to youth to engage them in garbage disposal and waste management practices. We will work with communities to improve public health and environmental management,” Mr Joho said.
The plant is expected to solve the garbage gridlock that has bedevilled the county for a long time since garbage collection has been Mr Joho’s biggest problem, with his government blamed for the frequent disease outbreaks in the county that claimed the lives of many residents.
