Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi chaired a special sitting to respond to the water shortage being experienced in some parts of Kilifi and Mombasa Counties.

The shortage followed the disconnection of electricity at the Baricho water pumping station by Kenya Power Company last week.

Also present at the meeting was a delegation from Coast Water Services Board (CWSB) led by Ag Chairperson Sureya Hersi, the Kilifi County Water CeC Kiringi Mwachitu and the Managing Directors of Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO) and the Kilifi-Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (KIMAWASCO).

The parties agreed that the CWSB would give MAWASCO, KIMAWASCO and the Mombasa Water and Sewerage Company the mandate to deal directly with Kenya Power Company.

"This in effect will settle the impasse that has seen our taps run dry for the past few days," the governor said, adding that his administration had also stepped in and cleared all outstanding power bills owed to the Kenya Power Company by both MAWASCO and KIMAWASCO.

He said this would avoid a repeat of the horrid situation which afflicted coast people.

"Normal water pumping has now fully resumed at the Baricho Main station this afternoon and water will soon be flowing in our taps," Kingi added on Monday.

He affirmed that the County government of Kilifi remains committed to the provision of water to the Kilifi electorate and would fully perform its mandate to ensure water services are brought closer to our people.

"We remain positive that such crises will be a thing of the past."
