Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has lauded President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive to lower electricity connection tariffs.
Speaking during a Kenya Power customer dialogue forum in Nakuru on Friday, Mbugua welcomed the directive saying it was the right step towards realising social economic development.
Mbugua said that many households that had no power in remote areas will now have access to electricity. The Nakuru governor observed that access to energy will boost development and establishment of industries across the country.
“The President did well to lower the electricity connection tariffs. Our people will now have 24 hour electricity,” he said. He urged energy and electricity providers to immediately implement the directive.
He said that Kenyans have been suffering in darkness but now will have a chance to conduct their work even at night.
Mbugua said his government will work with the national government to make sure that all residents are connected.
“I will personally work round the clock and supervise the process to make sure that all schools across Nakuru County have power,” he said.
He urged the national government to devolve the energy sector saying counties can handle the sector well so that people at the grassroots levels are connected with electricity.
On Wednesday President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a 50 per cent reduction in electricity connectivity rates.
