The county currently has about Sh3 billion questionable debts awaiting payment according to a recent internal audit.

The county Governor Lee Kinyanjui has since maintained that the county will not pay the debts owed to suppliers and contractors, citing inflation and fictitious deliveries.

However, a new twist is emerging, with reports indicating that the county government is partly to blame for the mess.

According to a new report which has since been handed to Kinyanjui, confirming that only 722 million of the Sh3 billion debt is justifiable, county officials are suspected to have suspended procurement laws, engaged in massive corruption and ignored Public Finance Management act while giving out the tenders.

The report indicates that some of the tender offers and requests granted by the government lacked proper documentation.

''Most pending bills lacked crucial records such as engineers report/certificates, project inspection reports, and joint measurements among others,'' reads the report in part as was seen by the Standard.

''The pending bills are also linked to failure (by the county government) to adhere to budget timelines as provided in the Public Finance Management Act/ Regulations,'' it further reads.

The report is set to be made public this week.
