Garissa Governor Ali Korane has ordered the ban of selling large quantity charcoal outside the county from October 1.
Addressing journalists at his office, Governor Korane said charcoal burning in the county has brought ‘a lot of problems’ adding that anyone found transporting the commodity will be arrested and arraigned in court.
The Governor who was flunked with officers from Kenya Forest said there have been transportation of charcoal in large quantities of about 8-10 lorries on a daily basis without payment of any dues to the county government.
Mr Korane has also order the ban of mining Gypsum until such a time the county administration comes with modalities of issuing permits.
“There have been a lot of destruction and large transportation of charcoal that we have ordered to be banned, we will work with Kenya forest service and the police to arrest anyone found flouting these rules,” Korane told journalists.
The governor however said revenue from charcoal burning within the county is allowed since locals have no alternative source of energy.
