Garissa County Governor Ali Korane has swiftly begun his tenure by streamlining county operations by a thorough audit of workers, causing panic among the county employees.
The decision follows allegations that the county has ghost workers who have been getting salaries from the previous county administration.
A source revealed that NTSA and KRA, under-age children, university students and Kenyans living abroad are among the beneficiaries of underhand dealings.
“All members of staff will have been paid before the end of this week but through a cheque. They must present themselves physically with their national cards,” the source said.
Governor Korane assured that his administration will do away with ghost workers.
“We shall audit the payroll against the staff list. Areas being looked at include outstanding bills owed to contractors and other service providers,” Korane said.
“I want to assure all the county staff that there will be not victimization. If you were employed procedurally, then you have reason to panic,” he added.
He noted that all CECs and chief officers in the county have been sent on compulsory leave.
