Governor Jackson Mandago of Uasin Gishu, Stephen Sang of Nandi and other local leaders from the region led residents in paying respect to the late Bishop Cornelius Korir at a requiem mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Eldoret.
Members of the clergy, political leaders, and followers from the region thronged the Cathedral crowds where a mammoth crowd was witnessed. The Myoot Council of elders which brings together Kalenjin elders was represented by their chair John Seei.
Security Officers had a tough time controlling the swelling crowds. There was a heavy presence of security officers to keep things in check and guarantee public safety.
The late Bishop Korir will be buried inside the Church in an elaborate ceremony befitting his stature. President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Samoei Ruto are expected at the function.
Bishop Korir was very vocal on issues of national unity and always advocated for dialogue amongst leaders to breed cohesion. The late Bishop is re-known for his peace efforts in the North Rift region.
In 2007/2008, he hosted a number of internally displaced people within the Church during the height of the post-election violence.
