Nakuru County Governor Kinuthia Mbugua says that minority groups living in the county play a crucial role in enhancing peace and cohesion.
Speaking yesterday during a consultative meeting with members of the Turkana Community living in Nakuru, Kinuthia said that he is committed to ensuring that the communities are actively involved in the growth of the county.
“We cannot ignore the existence of these groups within our midst. They play an irreplaceable role in the process of building peace and cohesion in the country. My government is committed to recognising their presence and involving them as key stakeholders in every step of peace building programs,” Kinuthia reaffirmed.
The minority groups in Nakuru County have gone a long way in working with peace building initiatives and the church to restore and maintain peace in the county that was adversely affected during the 2007/8 general election aftermath.
Kinuthia lauded the Turkana community for embracing development initiatives including taking their children to school, emphasising that this will go a long way in putting them at par with the rest of the communities.
“It is only through education that we can transform our society. It is encouraging to note the large number of the Turkana members who have attained great level of education. This is a guarantee that they have achieved required standards for eligibility in issuance of job opportunities which places them on the same level with other communities,” the governor noted.
The Turkana community members were led by their county chairman Dr Joseph Lenai to address the challenges affecting them as a minority group in Nakuru County.
The governor pledged to liaise with the registrar of persons’ office to address the challenge of issuance of identification documents which the group raised as a major concern.
