Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has asked the national government to consider devolving the education sector to county governments.
Mbugua said that devolving education will enable Kenyans at grassroot level to access better and affordable education.
Speaking at Mt Longonot Group of Schools over the weekend, Mbugua said that with enough resources, county governments are in a better position to run the education sector.
“The government should now consider devolving the education sector to the county governments so that many people can access it,” said Mbugua.
The governor indicated that many challenges facing the education sector especially infrastructure development will be dealt with if the sector is devolved.
He at the same time asked the national government to ensure Kenyans can access quality and affordable education.
The county boss stated that education remains the key to many challenges facing the society and that more measures should be put in place to promote its standards.
Mbugua at the same time said that his government has taken various initiatives to promote education standards in the county.
To promote early childhood education, Mbugua said that his government has constructed over 150 classrooms in Nursery schools across the county and has put in place measures including free feeding programmes and provision of learning materials for the schools.
The governor called for public-private sector partnerships in a bid to promote education.
“There is need for the government to work with the private sector to boost education standards in schools across the country,” he added.
Mbugua pledged to support public and private schools in the county adding that Nakuru hosts some of best performing schools in the country and there is need to encourage students to perform well in national examinations.
