Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua is the latest leader to weigh in on the heated constitutional amendment debate, throwing his weight being the referendum push.
In a tweet on Monday, the county boss noted that the nation needs an urgent solution to its social and political shortcomings, adding that he will rally behind the referendum move which promises to address the poverty and instability shortcomings.
"We need to have stability and an efficient way of ensuring rapid development and victory over poverty. If that requires change in our executive structure, let it be so, our people have struggled for too long," he said.
The debate is being spearheaded by opposition leader Raila Odinga's lieutenants and has since elicited mixed reactions, being endorsed and objected by political leaders alike.
Deputy President William Ruto and his quarters have led the way in opposing the move which seeks to introduce a powerful prime minister post and the demotion of the presidency, reducing the currently most powerful post to a ceremonial head of state position.
The DP has, however, termed the attempt as a plot by a clique of politicians to allocate themselves power.
"We cannot undertake another constitutional change to satisfy a few politicians. We have to concentrate on national issues and not how to impress a few political leaders," he said in Kakamega last month.
The amendment will also revert the nation to the initial parliamentary leadership system from the current presidential one.
