Machakos governor Alfred Mutua has hinted at vying for the presidency in 2022, just a day after he was endorsed for the same seat by the Kamba Council of Elders.
Speaking in Mwingi on Sunday, Mutua thanked the elders for having faith in his leadership, asking for more time to "think over the matter."
“I want to assure the Kamba Council of Elders and the leaders who have faith in me that I will not let them down. However, this is not about me but about our community and our great country Kenya. I will therefore need some time to make a decision,” Mutua stated.
The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader's endorsement was announced on Saturday at the Machakos People's Park.
Despite having a frosty political relationship with Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Mutua has been largely viewed as a possible heir to Musyoka in the Ukambani succession politics.
