The declaration by Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua that he will vie for presidency in 2022 general elections came at the right time.
For it goes without saying that the Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader, has proved beyond any doubts that he is a performer, after having been rated in a World Bank report as the best performing of all governors for three consecutive years.
Although Mutua has been called names by dozen of politicians-mainly in Ukambani who he claims are envious of his development record, he has remained steadfast in his quest to eliminate poverty in Machakos, by initiating numerous visible projects which have improved living standards of most of the residents.
Since he became governor, Mutua has ensured local residents have access to water, roads, health services as well as quality and efficient services.
For example, it is worth noting that Machakos Stadium, which was constructed by the county government is the only FIFA-approved stadium constructed by the county government in the country.
It is also not open to debate that governor Mutua has constructed the highest number of tarmac roads than any other governor in the country. Through Mutua's initiative, Machakos has also benefited from a notable boom of road infrastructure development by the national government which has in turn stimulated the region's economy by facilitating efficient movement of goods and people.
It is worth mentioning that some of the local politicians who are unhappy with Mutua's presidential ambitions had been in politics for over three decades and have nothing to show, other than playing the usual 'tribal kingpin card.'
Kenyans have got to realize time is ripe to spot budding young and energetic leaders with sound principles-not the traditional lot of recycled old guard whose fame is founded on populist politics, money and tribal patronage.
It will take leaders like Mutua to have this country transformed into a real working nation-not a politicking nation.
