Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has lauded devolution, saying that it has transformed the lives of Kenyans.

Mutua argues that devolution has set the standards of service delivery high, noting that Kenyans are now enjoying services they never used to get.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the governor’s induction at Reef beach hotel in Diani, Kwale County on Friday, Mutua asked Kenyans to guard devolution jealously.

He said that majority of counties have recorded major milestones since devolution concept was implemented after the 2013 general election.

“We have seen the power and success of devolution and we appeal on Kenyans to protect the constitution that provides for devolved system of governance,” he told journalists on Friday.

Mutua however complained of delays in disbursing county funds.

He said that some delays by the national government in disbursing the funds has hampered implementation of development projects.

He called on the National Treasury and other relevant agencies to ensure county monies are disbarred on time.

The Maendelo Chap Chap (MCC) governor also complained of massive wastage of county resources.

He appealed to governors to put in palace measures that will safeguard public resources and ensure service delivery to the people.

Mutua at the same pleaded with the national government to increase allocations to counties. He said that the current allocations are not sufficient to implement county projects.

The Machakos county boss complained that a huge chunk of the national government goes to paying salaries at the expense of development.
