Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has called for political maturity and tolerance among politicians across the divide as the country heads to the general election next month.
Mutua warns that acts of no intolerance being experienced among supporters of politicians in government and opposition is a recipe for chaos.
Addressing supporters at Ekalakala trading centre in Machakos on Sunday, governor Mutua said that the country is staring at pre and post poll chaos if intolerance is not condemned in the strongest terms possible.
Mutua asked politicians to tame their supporters and preach unity in their campaigns. “We don’t want to experience violence and bloodshed as we did in 2007/2008,” he said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Governor Mutua urged Kenyans to reject politicians who are fanning intolerance acts and violence.
He said that the country has made large steps since the 2007/2008 post poll chaos and cannot afford to go back to the dark days that led to loss of lives, destruction of property and displacement of Kenyans.
The Machakos Governor urged Kenyans to remain peaceful and united before, during and after the August 8 general election.
There have been concerns over the rising political temperatures occasioned with intolerance across the divide.
On Saturday during the burial of the late Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Joseph Nkaissery president Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga called for peace and tolerance.
President Kenyatta said that their no need for Kenyans to fight because of politicians, adding that the country has to remain united before, during and after the August 8 polls.
