Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has initiated an elaborate plan to remove the infamous Kachok dumpsite.
This is inline with his ten point plan during unveiling of his Manifesto, where he pledged to ensure the lakeside city is cleaned and Kachok dump site solid waste is recycled and used for making fertilisers and chemicals.
"Kachok dumpsite is finally going down as I did promise during our campaigns. In line with our 10-point development plan which I stated clearly when I took oath of office last month I have initiated an elaborate plan to remove the dump site. The plan seeks to have among other things relocate the dumpsite away from Nyamasaria," said the governor, Thursday.
"The dumpsite has not only been an eyesore to the people of Kisumu but also a stumbling block to a number of investments. The garbage also attracts birds which pose real danger to planes flying in and out of Kisumu," he added.
Also affected by the Kachok dumpsite has been the adjacent Moi Stadium, a move that saw Football Kenya Federation threaten to ban its use if the filth is not removed.
In his Manifesto, Nyong'o also pledged to clear up the drainage system in the city; initiate the improvement of road networks and clean up the lake front in preparation for further infrastructural improvement to facilitate maritime transport, tourism and regional trade.
