Panic has gripped Kisumu County Government workers after 14 chief officers were sent on compulsory leave.
Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o directed the chief officers to hand over to directors in their respective departments.
He further asked them to remain available to answer to any queries that may arise adding that their positions shall be advertised once the county assembly reconvenes.
The directive has sent shivers at the county government headquarters with fears that an audit had been commissioned to investigate how public funds were spent in the line departments.
However Nyong’o said he had received communication from the Council of Governors indicating that the term of the officers ended with the last government.
“Their term of office was pegged on that of the former governor. Therefore they have no business being here since their duties can be performed by the directors as we make arrangements to appoint new officers,” he said.
Nyong’o who relocated the governor’s office from the ninth floor of prosperity house to second floor promised to form a lean government to effectively deliver services for the people of Kisumu.
He defended the relocation saying the ninth floor was not easily accessible affecting service delivery.
“It is hectic for people seeking services to climb up to the 9th floor as the building has not been fitted with a public elevator,” he said.
The ninth floor office which was refurbished at a cost of Sh 9 million, he said shall be occupied by other county departments.
