Kisii County should invest in early childhood education by building more ECDE classes and employ more teachers if the county wants to increase the level of literacy, a nominated MCA has said.
Speaking on Tuesday at Nyamarambe township in South Mugirango, Mrs Joyce Isaac alleged that the county government had slowed down the initiative of adding more ECDE classes in the region, to the dismay of many MCAs.
She challenged Governor James Ongwae to revive the project as a way of getting in touch with locals who were in dire need of education.
“When Governor Ongwae assumed powers, he promised to invest in early childhood education. However, I am not convinced with the rate at which the education is being supported by his regime to all parts,” she said.
“He must build more ECDE centres besides deploying human resource to those centres if at all we want to improve the literacy levels in our county. This can be done because he has the machinery and powers to do so,” she said.
Mrs Isaac challenged residents of South Mugirango constituency to take their children to institutions of higher learning in aim to challenge the perception that the region was primitive and backward.
“I know most of you have taken your children for further studies but the figure ought to go up. Remember South Mugirango has always been viewed as a primitive and backward region in entire Gusii in terms of education,” she added.
