Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago wants the recent national ban on logging extended by nine more months.
According to Mandago, the high rate at which forests are being depleted is worrying calling on the national government to extend the ban from three months to one year.
He said, during the one year period, government should institute a calendar when each Kenyan should plant a tree.
"To be sincere three months are not enough," said Mandago.
Mandago addressed the press outside his office in Eldoret town on Friday.
"The ban should be extended to one year. That would be appropriate, and each Kenyan during this period should plant a specific number of trees," he added.
Mandago's call came seven days after the Deputy President William Ruto suspended logging in all forests in the country for three months as water levels in key rivers and streams continue to drop.
Ruto said the ban will give the government adequate time to find a lasting solution to drying of rivers that supply water to lakes including Lakes Victoria, East Africa's main source of fresh water.
The DP also ordered Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko to come up with a framework within two weeks to deal with illegal logging and the destruction of water catchment zones.
