The move by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to categorize Kilifi among potential hotspots of violence will hurt tourism, Governor Amason Kingi has said.
The county boss said the move will create unnecessary tension in the region, which will in turn affect the tourism sector.Speaking in his backyard, Kingi said the announcement has led to a drop in the number of tourists checking into hotels in the area. Other counties listed among possible hotspots of violence include Mombasa, Homa Bay, Baringo, Turkana, West Pokot, Lamu, Migori, Kiambu and Bungoma.Others are Uasin Gishu, Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Kisii and Isiolo. This comes a few days after European Union election observers warned on the possibility of political violence in different parts of the nation. The EU called upon the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct free and fair polls for the sake of peace in the nation. Both President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga have pledged to concede defeat if the elections are credible for the sake of Kenya’s economic growth.
