Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma has finally answered some Kisumu residents who have been calling on his government to repair roads in the county.
Governor Ranguma announced that national government still holds on roads docket adding that Legislators have declined to devolve the roads sector to county governments.
The Governor however, noted that roads at the county level are in pathetic state and needs an urgent rehabilitation.
“The public should know that we do not receive roads fund, therefore it is very unfair to keep on putting pressure on county government to repair roads. We also want these roads repaired soonest since they are in pathetic state,” clarified Governor Ranguma.
Speaking in Muhoroni sub-county on Monday when he toured several projects, Governor Ranguma said Governors are not ready to assume duties whose funds are still withheld by the national government, hence urged national government to consider repairing roads to make transport easier.
Ranguma said most Governors are now allocating funds meant for other projects to carry out roads rehabilitation owing to the bad state of the roads in their respective counties.
“We have to dip our hands in other sectors to do some roads rehabilitation because our people need to have good roads,” said Ranguma.
He said MPs should be responsible for the rehabilitation of roads in their constituencies since they have failed to fast track devolving roads functions to the counties.
Ranguma said the Council of Governors is in Court to compel the national government to devolve roads functions.
