Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu stands better chance of retaining his post after a group of youths agreed to back his re-election. More than 2000 youths from different parts of the county have pledged to rally voters behind the county boss.

Mruttu lost during Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) before opting to defend his seat as an Independent candidate.

The county boss’ has received support of youths from different areas including Wundanyi, Voi, Mwatate and Taveta.

The youths argue that the governor has delivered his pre-election promises. Mr Joseph Mwadime, a youth leader from Mwatate, said that Mruttu deserves another term because he has listened to the needs of the residents for the last four years he has been in power.

"Our governor deserves a second term to continue with his development projects. At least he has shown commitment to better [the] lives of the electorate," he said, as quoted by Nation.

The new development is likely to change the political situation of the region as we head to the polls. On his part, the governor has urged the residents to elect leaders who will fight for their rights rather than mere propaganda when that time comes.

"Embrace leaders who approach you with solid and pragmatic transformation agenda and those whose ideologies are based on improving your living standards," he said.
