Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu now says the lack of civic education is to blame for the low turnout during the mass voter registration exercise.
According to Mruttu, people have not been enlightened enough on why they should engage in elections hence making them shun the ongoing exercise by the IEBC.
"The lack of civic education is the contributor of the low turnout of individuals to be registered as voters. The people have not been enlightened on why they should be registered as voters and hence they have shied away," Mruttu added.
Speaking on Radio Maisha on Tuesday, the governor further said he had been disappointed by the call by the electoral commission stating that it will stick to the February 14 deadline.
Mruttu believes that more time will enable more people to get enlisted.
"I am disappointed that IEBC is halting the registration exercise on February 14. They should extend the period to enable more people to register and participate in the August elections," added Mruttu.
