Contrary to popular opinion that the governor had traveled to South Africa for a minor injury, Ruto said that the injuries were serious.

"As you can see, the operation was done through cutting the face. They did internal access, what they call minimal invasion, and they use guided cameras and were able to do the job in three hours," Ruto is quoted by Nation.

The governor came under online mockery after he was accused of going to South Africa for a bandage removal.

He was injured after a police officer allegedly threw a tear gas canister on his face.
