Governor Granton Samboja has requested the people of Taita Taveta County to take action to plant and grow a tree.
"Our forest cover is below the expected. The wanton human destruction of our forest cover is exposing us to water challenges and harsh climate changes. It is time to take action and conserve our environment," said the Governor as he joined residents in marking this year's International Forests Day.
As a County Government, Samboja said they have banned all logging activities and are planting trees to ensure sustainable development through the Department of Lands and Environment so as to attain the 10% forest cover required by the National government.
The World water day theme this year is "Nature for water". Exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face. Some examples of nature-based solutions include restoring forests, grasslands and natural wetlands.
"I also take this moment to congratulate each and every Datuzen who is taking time to plant and grow trees in their various communities and villages. Working with the Department of Lands and Environment we will reward all individuals who plant and grow trees and attain the required survival rate. We need to live our county better than we found it."
Speaking on Wednesday, Samboja revealed that he had donated Sh200,000 from his foundation, to the construction and finishing of one of the classrooms at Dembwa Primary School.
