Speaking at his office on Friday, Nyagarama reiterated that many people take advantage and skip working on Fridays for the sake of attending funerals. He noted the vice has negatively affected the economy not only for the county but also for the entire nation.

“It is my suggestion that people bury their loved ones on weekends. This is after executing their duties for the entire week as it should be. I urge my constituents to support my idea,” he said.

He asked Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to come up with a legislation that will safeguard the idea for the sake of development.

Nyagarama said many working hours are lost in funerals and this will jeopardise the nation’s vision 2030 objectives. He urged MPs and senators to submit a similar bill in parliament.

“I have spoken to County Assembly and I know they will work expeditiously to legitimise the law. I also urge the national government to mobilise national leadership in parliament to support this initiative,” added Nyagarama.

However, his statement has come under immense criticism from a section of the county assembly with some members terming it a “myopic and retrogressive” law that is a waste of time and energy.

“These are unfortunate utterances by the governor. This shows how inhumane and idle he is to think like that. It is unacceptable and we will shoot down the bill in case it is tabled,” said Beuttah Omanga.
