Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has accused chiefs and MCAs of deceiving residents to sell land.
The county chief said some residents were selling land for as low as Sh3,000 per acre, a development he said was “unacceptable”.Speaking in Magarini where he campaigned on Friday, Kingi said his administration will strive to stop cheap land sales in Kilifi. He said wealthy politicians were taking advantage of the poverty among some Magarini residents to buy their land at throw away prices. He singled out Baricho, Dakach and Boyani as the most affected areas.“This trend has to stop,” he said.“There’s nowhere in this world today where an acre of land goes for Sh3,000. We understand people have problems, but selling an acre of land for as low as Sh3,000 is taking jokes to a different level.”Kingi said the county Lands Department will institute propose regulations which, when passed by the County Assembly will regulate land sales in the county.“Land is among the most precious assets one can own. I will ensure this asset is protected in Kilifi,” Kingi said warning MCAs and chief in the county who abate cheap land sales.Kilifi is among devolved units in Kenya where large parcels of land lie idle despite the high poverty levels in the county that receives adequate rainfall to support agriculture. The county recently experienced famine that followed drought that hit most parts of the Kenya in late 2016 and early 2017.
